Starting with Analogue - 35mm SLR

Working with classic Pentax K1000 Cameras, participants will learn about shutter speed (movement) aperture (depth-of-field), framing and light measurement. The main focus will be to encourage engagement and confidence with the potential afforded by analogue SLR cameras, in order to use them for landscape, urban photography, portraiture and other applications. Students will have access to Pentax K1000 cameras for their group assignments.

This workshop will be taught in two parts; firstly, in-person (Saturday), and secondly, as an online feedback session (Thursday, 6:30-8:30pm). Please note: the first session will involve a technical introduction to cameras, urban visual practice and composition. In the afternoon, participants will walk around the Bethnal Green area on a photographic assignment.

About the tutors

Paul Halliday is an artist, interdisciplinary urbanist and educator who originally trained in photojournalism and fine art film at the London College of Communications and Central St Martins (UAL). He is the former founding convenor of the international MA Photography & Urban Cultures, ran the third year of the BA Photomedia at Croydon Art School. He has extensive experience of working with 35mm and medium format film cameras. Paul works on long-term photographic and film projects exploring the nature of contemporary urban spaces. Xinrui Qiu is a photographer and visual artist, trained in photography at Goldsmiths, working with colour analogue photography and moving image. Her practice investigates memory, identity, and urban environments, combining archival work with research on diaspora and displacement. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in London, Los Angeles, and Beijing, and through collaborative projects and research initiatives that explore social and spatial narratives.
